From Uncertainty to Hope
Just a few years ago, Theopista felt trapped by poverty, isolation, and uncertainty about her future. Today, the 31-year-old mother from Ruhango District is building a stable life for her children and inspiring other young women in her community through resilience, discipline, and determination.
After dropping out of school due to early pregnancy, Theopista faced years of hardship. With two children to raise and no stable income, she depended heavily on her parents and struggled to find direction in life. Despite the challenges, she never lost the desire to create a better future.
Finding Strength Through AIM
In 2024, Theopista joined the AIM program through the Karama AIM Club, a decision she describes as life changing. “For the first time, I sat with girls who understood my life. I realized I was not alone,” she says.
Through mentorship, life-skills training, and peer support, she gradually rebuilt her confidence and sense of purpose. Her commitment and leadership later earned her a position on the Youth Development Committee member, where she became a role model for other young women in her community.
Turning Opportunity into Action
The next turning point came when Theopista received business support that enabled her to start a small farming and vegetable-selling enterprise. “That is when I realized I can do something better for my life,” she recalls. She invested carefully, started generating her own income, and developed a strong culture of saving. In 2025, she joined BRAC Rwanda Microfinance Company PLC and expanded her business into the local market. Her discipline quickly set her apart. She became known as a reliable saver and responsible loan client who used financial services to grow her business steadily and sustainably.
Building Financial Independence
Through hard work and consistent saving, Theopista’s business income grew by more than double, allowing her to achieve financial independence. Today, she can provide for her children, support her parents, and maintain a more stable and hopeful household environment. When something goes wrong, I don’t panic anymore. My savings help me manage it, and they also help me take new opportunities when they come,” she explains. Her journey highlights the power of combining financial literacy, mentorship, and access to responsible financial services.
Inspiring Other Young Women
Today, Theopista uses her experience to encourage other girls and young women facing difficult circumstances. “Do not give up on your life. Start small, save what you can, and take opportunities seriously. You can change your future,” she says. Her advice to young girls is simple but powerful:
“Work hard, avoid rushing into relationships too early, stay disciplined, and never stop believing that your future can be better.”
Looking Ahead
Theopista now hopes to continue expanding her business, invest further in farming, and build a secure future for her children. Her story is a reminder that with opportunity, determination, and the right support, young women can overcome hardship and build lasting change for themselves, their families, and their communities.
